February 27, 2013CardinalSports.com's Howie Lindsey was on the baseline at Chicago's Allstate Arena for the Louisville-DePaul game. Check out his quick observations from Louisville's relatively easy win.
The Cardinals missed their first four shots and fell behind 8-0 before ending the first half on a 34-17 run. UofL appeared to be sluggish early on and the DePaul crowd - limited as it was - cheered every move their team made.
After Louisville scored the next 10 points, the home crowd died down and settled in for what everyone originally expected - a blowout loss for the Blue Demons. Still, DePaul kept the margin in single digits by halftime.
Louisville didn't return to the court at halftime until the 2:41 mark. The Cardinals got a quick layup line in before the buzzer sounded for the second half.
RUSS GETS 1,000
Only a starter for a season and a half, Russ Smith is a remarkable addition to Louisville's 1,000 point scorer's list. Smith, Louisville's leading scorer this season, came into the game averaging 18.8 points per game.
He needed 15 points to reach 1,000 for his career and he got point number 1,000 with 7:42 left in the second half at DePaul.
Smith's 1,000th point was greeted with a loud cheer from the Cardinal fans in attendance. The in-arena stats were incorrect, leading most fans to cheer a little after Russ' 1,000th point.
The student section of about 40 kids sitting behind press row were awful throughout the game. Cursing constantly and hurling lame "You Suck" taunts at Louisville players there were the worst of college athletics.
