Jacksonville OT makes his pick
Louisville coach Charlie Strong picked up his sixth commitment in the class of 2014 - and fourth commitment in the last week - Tuesday when he got a call from Jacksonville, Fla.
Kavaris Harkless, an offensive tackle from Jackonville's Trinity Christian School, committed to Louisville Tuesday. A 6-foot-5, 276-pound prospect, Harkless made his pick after receiving his first half-dozen offers.
Harkless confirmed his pick to CardinalSports.com via text shortly after noon. He is the sixth commitment in Louisville's class and the first lineman in the class. The Cardinals other commits are a quarterback, a safety and three players who play linebacker in high school.
Harkless played last season in the 240-250 pound range, leaving most coaches wanting to see him add some weight. He is up to 276 now, and Trinity Christian assistant coach Gerard Ross told Rivals.com in March that Harkless can likely get bigger.
"He's carrying it real well," Ross said in March. "Coaches like his film. They just wanted to see him get his weight up. Right now they're really starting to offer."
His coaches say the offers started arriving for Harkless in March. Iowa State, Maryland, Minnesota and UCF were among the schools that offered early on. Louisville, Duke and several others offered in the last month as well.
After Louisville offered, the Cardinals moved into a tight race with previous favorites Duke and UCF on his list. But Harkless made his college pick Tuesday.
