Field Hockey looking good
We start the week in review with Field Hockey continuing their impressive season. With a rain-soaked overtime win on Friday over Big East conference foe Old Dominion who holds on to a #20 national ranking, followed up with a come from behind win against Northeastern on Sunday, the Cardinals look to improve on their current #19 ranking.
The first RPI ranking of the season is out for Field Hockey and Louisville shows up at #25, a good start to be sure.
Field Hockey is on the road continuing Big East play with a single game this Saturday, a theoretically neutral field game against Georgetown University in College Park, MD.
Women's Golf continuing to impress
The Women's Golf team finished in 6th place in a rain-shortened Mercedes Benz Women's Collegiate tournament in Knoxville, TN. The top two team finishes were SEC teams Arkansas and South Carolina.
Women's Golf will be back in action Monday and Tuesday in the Chicago, IL area in the Windy City Invitational.
Volleyball on an upswing
Saturday saw two UofL Volleyball matches. The first in front of a Cardinal Arena crowd that probably would've been considerably larger had there not been a terribly lopsided Football game going on down the street. The VolleyCards were clearly the better team versus Rice University in the midday match. Dispatching the Owls in three straight sets, the outcome of this one wasn't ever in all that much doubt but it was surely better contested than the 72-0 drubbing going on down at the other end of Floyd Street.
The evening contest was a different matter altogether. The Men's Swimming and Diving team made quite a splash in front of the standing room only crowd (officially 1008 in Cardinal Arena, which only seats 840) by removing an article of clothing for each point the Cards won in the first set in what is becoming a yearly tradition. What they'll do if the first set ever goes extra points is still undetermined, though we did almost find out Saturday night. The VolleyCards did win the first set in 25, but just barely, taking the set 25-23. The second set went to future conference foe Virginia Tech 25-12. Coming back from the break, and with swimmers and divers still in Speedo's, things got interesting. An epic battle ensued with one of the longest sets your author has ever personally witnessed. The Cards finally fell with a score of 36-34. Not giving up, though, the Hokies couldn't stay with the determined UofL team and lost the last two sets 25-18, and 15-9.
After the epic two hour and twenty minute long match, the Volleyball team will open conference play in The American Conference, and open their KFC Yum! Center slate, with a Friday evening matchup against Memphis. Starting at 7pm, if you can't make it downtown in person, you can catch this one TV on WHAS 11.2, Comcast 202, or Time Warner Cable 432.
Conference play continues on Sunday with a 2pm first serve against another new conference foe in Temple. This one isn't televised, but is also at the KFC Yum! Center.
Volleyball is looking to get back to a .500 record by the end of the weekend and continue the momentum into the rest of conference play.
The Women's Soccer team lost a heartbreaker in a two overtime match against Marquette in Milwaukee Wisconsin. The Cards came from behind to tie the game at two in regulation. A handball in the box gave the Golden Eagles the chance to take the game on a penalty kick. They capitalized on the opportunity to end the game and take the win in the last of Louisville's non-conference regular season games.
Coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes brings her team back home to also play Memphis Friday night in the conference opener at Cardinal Park on Floyd Street on campus. Game time is the same as for Volleyball vs Memphis, with a 7pm start so you'll have to pick which sport you want to see more. Rutgers also pays Cardinal Park a visit on Sunday with a 1pm start.
The UofL Women's Tennis team will start their all-season schedule with the Miami of Ohio Invitation in Oxford Ohio on Saturday and Sunday.
