Louisville guard Kevin Ware was the focus of national attention during the NCAA Tournament last March when he suffered a compound fracture on national television. Ware recently received great news.
Ware, who was on crutches during the final two games of Louisville's run to the 2013 NCAA Championship, became a national celebrity during the tournament.
Ware had surgery immediately after the injury and has been rehabbing ever since. Pitino said Ware's progress is encouraging.
"He started working out yesterday," Pitino said. "I would say he will be able to play all out basketball sometime at the end of October."
But the physical side of Ware's recovery isn't the only thing that is important.
"Then he will have to overcome the psychological side of everything," Pitino said.
Pitino said Ware has not watched the gruesome injury, and he wouldn't recommend it.
"He asked me if he should watch it," Pitino said. "I told him it would not help you to watch it in any way so I wouldn't recommend watching it."
