July 8, 2008 Shot in the back after an argument in a local Louisville, Ky. nightclub Saturday morning, Louisville wide receiver Trent Guy underwent surgery early Saturday that likely saved his life. On Monday, Louisville coach Steve Kragthorpe sent a note to local media updating Guy's medical progress."I'm happy to report that Trent is recovering well from his injury suffered on Saturday morning," Kragthorpe said. "My family and I have personally had the opportunity to visit with Trent, and am happy to report he is up and walking around. Because of Trent's popularity on this team and in the community, a number of people have also visited him. Trent is in good spirits and is appreciative of the support he has received." Kragthorpe's note also outlined new rules for his football team's conduct off the field. "I've met with the team on two different occasions on Saturday and again (Monday)afternoon when everyone returned for the start of the third summer session," Kragthorpe said. "Our players need to be mindful about the situations they place themselves in with regard to their well-being. I've instituted a curfew and restrictions in terms of where are players are permitted to go. I will give periodic updates to everyone on Trent's progress as I receive them." Guy was shot in the back early Saturday outside garage near a downtown nightclub. The 20-year-old junior was taken to University Hospital, where he was in stable condition after surgery, and has continued to recover ever since. The shooting was reported about 2:25 a.m., police spokesman Phil Russell said. He declined to say if Guy was shot, citing police department policy, but he confirmed there was a shooting involving a 20-year-old male. Police said there have been no arrests and they are investigating. Guy played in all 12 games for the Cardinals last season at receiver and was the team's top kick returner. He caught 11 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns, and averaged 22.2 yards on kickoff returns and scored a touchdown. He was expected to start at receiver this season. |
