August 24, 2009 According to a University of Louisville press release Monday, five players who were drafted in this spring's Major League Baseball Draft have chosen to forego professional contracts in favor of joining the 2010 Cardinal baseball team. Monday, the first day of classes at UofL, marked the enrollment of five future pros to Louisville's sluggers including returning senior first baseman Andrew Clark.UofL baseball coach Dan McDonnell announced Monday that Clark has elected to return for his senior season, joining Cardinals' signees Asaad Ali, Matthew Koch, Brian Feekin and Zak Wasserman who began classes at UofL Monday. Clark was taken in the 31st round by the Chicago Cubs in last June's draft. The 6-foot-3, 220-pound senior was second on the team in hitting with a .350 average with nine homers and 55 RBIs last season for the Cardinals. Clark's return is big for a UofL squad that lost power-hitting third-baseman Chris Dominguez to the pros after Dominguez was drafted in the third round of June's MLB event. A Second Team All-Big East selection last season, Clark also earned the Jack Kaiser Award as the Most Outstanding Player of the Big East Championship after hitting .500 with eight RBIs and six runs scored in five games to lead the Cardinals' to their second straight tournament title. But Clark's not the only draftee that chose UofL over entry in the minors. Four recruits decided to enroll at UofL, banking on the experience and coaching of Dan McDonnell to advance their draft status in the coming years while earning a college education. Wasserman, a 6-6, 225-pound first baseman, was selected in the 21st round as the 627th selection overall by the San Francisco Giants after completing his senior season for Lake Shore High School in Mich. Koch, a 6-3, 185-pound right-handed pitcher from Iowa, was taken in the 37th round by the Boston Red Sox. Ali (5-10, 224, catcher), from Niles, Mich., was drafted in the 40th round by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Ali is the son of Muhammad Ali, Louisville's most-famous son. Feekin (6-6, 224, LHP), from Iowa Western Community College, was taken in the 44th round by the Philadelphia Phillies. Ali, Koch and Wasserman will each have four year's of eligibility for the Cards, while Feekin will have two years of collegiate eligibility remaining at Louisville. Louisville baseball is one of the fastest-rising programs in the nation under McDonnell's direction. In the last three years, Louisville's made the NCAA Tournament each season and has been to the 2007 College World Series and 2009 NCAA Super Regionals. |
