Harris hoping for Tech offer
Mesquite (Texas) Horn cornerback DeVante Harris has recently seen Texas Tech enter an already crowded race for his services. The Red Raiders seem to have captured some of Harris' attention, and now he's hoping for an offer.
"Yeah we've had some contact with Tech. They've gotten in touch with me and just told me how much they liked me and that they were interested in me," Harris said. "I think they're going to come by later this spring and watch me work out."
Harris is being recruited by assistant coach Sam McElroy. Although the relationship is a new one, Harris is looking forward to it progressing after they have an opportunity to meet in person.
"We've got a good relationship so far. We haven't gotten to know each other on that much of a personal level yet, but I know we can get there," he said. "When he comes out Mesquite to watch me and we get to meet in person we'll have a chance to really get to know each other."
"We're going to arrange something after that happens to get me up there to Tech. I think I might have a chance to get an offer after they come visit so I'll probably want to work out something to go see them after that happens."
Harris indicates that, in addition to Tech, he's hearing the most from Baylor, TCU, Texas, Mississippi State, Virginia, and SMU. So far he's made trips to Texas A&M and Mississippi State. He also took in the Baylor and Texas spring games recently, and he's planning on visiting SMU this weekend.
The 5-foot-11, 160-pounder has had a few programs stand out to him to this point in the process.
"Texas definitely stood out to me," he said. "SMU has too because I've liked them since I was a little kid. Texas Tech has been one that has stood out too. I've been reading online about Tech and I went to a camp they had there last year. I got to see the campus and I really liked it, so they've stood out since then also. I really liked Mississippi State when I got to see their campus too."
Harris doesn't have any plans for other visits during the remainder of the spring, but he is planning on making a decision before his senior season, so it's likely that the summer will bring a very busy visit schedule.
"I'm going to go to Virginia in the summer, and maybe Indiana too. I'll probably take a trip to see Tech too."
Harris currently holds offers from Mississippi State, North Texas, SMU, and Virginia. He's been shown interest by Baylor, Kansas, Oklahoma, TCU, Texas A&M, and Texas Tech.
