Cardinals prepare for Saturday scrimmage

Last Saturday, the Louisville defense was bested by Louisville's offense. Can the defense come back this Saturday? The defense will be looking to settle the score.

"We are going to just go out there and play hard," junior linebacker Preston Brown said. "We had some little mistakes that led to big plays last week so we just have to cut that down and play fast. If we do that we will be good."

"We are looking forward to it," junior defensive tackle Brandon Dunn said. "The offense got after us the first time and a good defense has to own up to it. We know we have a strong season ahead of us, so we are trying to get more players healthy and more players playing time."

Saturday will mark 15 days until the Cardinals take the field for the opening game of the season against Kentucky. Saturday's 9 a.m. workout will be closed to fans and media and will be the last scrimmage of camp.

After last week's controlled scrimmage, Charlie Strong said the second team defense gave up way too many big plays to the offense. Brown said his defense understands they all stand together.

"We are a total defense," Brown said. "It isn't ones or twos, and it doesn't matter how many freshmen we have in the two-deep we still have to make plays. We will cut down on the mistakes."

Louisville's offense has reportedly (through UofL sources) been explosive during camp, hitting big pass plays as sophomore Teddy Bridgewater is in full command of the offense now.

Offensive coordinator Shawn Watson said he likes what he has seen from Bridgewater and the offensive line so far in camp, but he'd like to see things cleaned up in the second scrimmage.

"We need to see consistency in playing clean," said offensive coordinator Shawn Watson after practice. "We have been very explosive. We want to see consistency in our clean play so that routes, the blocking patterns in the run game and the protections look like the drawings. We are getting closer. We still have work to do in playing clean."

The offense has been impressive to Brown.

"I don't know if it is different (from last year) as much as you can see it is flowing a lot better," Brown said. "They are making checks and running harder. It is just a different feel for the whole offense right now."

The scrimmage begins at 9 a.m. and will conclude before noon. Stay logged on to CardinalSports.com for more coverage of Louisville football.
