Cards roll over Southern Miss

In its first game after ending a 21-game winning streak, the No. 9 Louisville Cardinals came out hot against Southern Miss Friday night at the KFC Yum! Center. UofL improved to 6-1 with the blowout win.

Louisville scored the first 13 points against SoMiss including a pair of threes from Terry Rozier and a banked-in jumper by Mangok Mathiang. Southern Miss finally hit the scoreboard on a three by Jerrold Brooks with 14:32 on the clock.

As hot as Louisville started, the Cardinals went through a nearly five minute stretch with only a field goal. That stretch was broken at the 10:30 mark with a three by Chris Jones.

Louisville got back on track and finished the first half on a tear, stretching the lead to 34-13 with the help of 10 points from Chris Jones, nine from Rozier and six a piece by Wayne Blackshear and Montrezl Harrell.

UofL continued its impressive run in the second half, pushing ahead to a commanding 50-17 lead with just over 12 minutes left.

At one point in the second half, UofL guard Russ Smith had nine second half points to Southern Miss' four. The Cardinals led by more than 20 points the rest of the game.

Jones finished with 18 points and Smith and Harrell each had 11.
