Louisville women rebound with a win over Temple

The Louisville women's basketball team bounced back from their loss to top seed Connecticut with a 60-50 win over Temple at the KFC Yum Center on Wednesday night. Shoni Schimmel led the Cards with 21 points while Asia Taylor has a double double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

While the game was not a thing of beauty, Louisville coach Jeff Walz said "We are happy to get the win but not necessarily pleased with how we performed."

After a sluggish start by both squads the Cards led 20-19 but pulled away after holding the Owls scoreless for the last 6:22 of the half. The lead stretched to 32-19 early in the second half on a Taylor layup. Temple would cut the lead to four points a couple of times by midway though the second half, but Sara Hammond added a couple of layups to push the lead back to 11 after the under-four-minute media timeout.

When asked if a poor shooting night like this would have ended in a loss in the past, Walz responded, "A year or a year and a half ago, yes, but now we are finally continuing to defend." He added, "We didn't panic."

Poor free throw shooting by Louisville (12 of 26) almost made it interesting later in the game, but the Cardinals grabbed a 10 point victory pushing their record to 24-2 overall and 12-1 in the AAC. Temple did help either as they shot just 11 percent (1-9).

"It was definitely not a game you want to bring your son or daughter to and say, `Watch how they shoot free throws," Walz said.

Walz explained how he hopes to correct the poor shooting from the line. He said a player has to make 50 free throws for every free throw they missed during the game. Asia Taylor who went 6 for 8 from the field but struggled from the line going 2 for 8 will now have to make 300 free throws to clear her debt.

Louisville's next game is at Memphis Sunday at 3:30 p.m..
