Kidston's strong start has Louisville one win away
Louisville sophomore righty Anthony Kidston ran his collegiate record to 13-0 with a win in Game 4 of the Louisville NCAA Regional Saturday night. Kidston's quality start sets Louisville up for a Regional title game Sunday.
Kidston improved to 8-0 on the season after holding Kansas scoreless in the first inning before running into a bit of trouble in the fifth and sixth.
Despite loading the bases in both the fifth and sixth innings, Kidston was able to get out of each jam with the help of strong defense.
Kidston got a big cushion when his team scored a run in the second and third innings and then broke through with three runs in the fourth inning. The Cardinals added another insurance run in the sixth inning.
Kidston gave way to Cole Sturgeon in the eighth inning with the Cardinals leading 6-2. Sturgeon pitched the eighth inning, but, after loading the bases in the ninth, Louisville brought in closer Nick Burdi.
By virtue of its win over Kansas, Louisville is the lone undefeated team in the Regional. Kentucky (1-1) and Kansas (1-1) will play Sunday at noon. The winner will face Louisville Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. and the loser will be eliminated.
Because NCAA Regionals are double elimination, Louisville would have to lose twice Sunday (and Monday, if necessary) to be eliminated. A win Sunday and Louisville will advance to the Super Regionals where they will host by virtue of national seed Florida State's loss in the Tallahassee Regional.
