The Petrino Family Foundation established

Louisville football coach Bobby Petrino and his family announced a million dollar gift to Kosair Children's Hospital through the Children's Hospital Foundation Thursday. Petrino and his family also announced the creation of the Petrino Family Foundation, a non-profit organization that will have immediate benefits to UofL and the community.

"Football is really important, and we put a lot of effort into it. We want to be experts at it, but then when you walk around this hospital, and you see the doctors and nurses with these children, you understand this is about life - and saving someones life," Petrino said.

Petrino and his family have earmarked money to benefit the hospital's Trauma unit. When he was speaking with the media about the gift Thursday morning, Petrino was clearly emotional.

"I just think back to when we toured the hospital and we saw the premies and the babies in intensive care, and you think about your kids and your grandkids - you know, I'm a granddad now - and it just gives you a different perspective," Petrino said.

The Foundation will also provide a scholarship fund for talented future UofL students who cannot afford the cost of college tuition. The Foundation will also make a donation towards the purchase of new band uniforms for the University of Louisville Marching Band.

"Louisville has always been home to me and my family, and we are committed to giving back to this city and the University," said Petrino.

Kelsey Petrino Scott, Bobby's oldest daughter, will serve as executive director of the Foundation, with other family members also having direct involvement.

Petrino Scott said in a release, "I could not be more excited for the opportunity to get involved with the community and to help inspire families to come together, to help each other, and to reach out to those in need."
