Louisville's Shoni wins All-Star game MVP
Louisville's Shoni Schimmel won WNBA All-Star game MVP Saturday after scoring a record 29 points during the East's win over the West. Schimmel, a rookie, had the game of her life.
Schimmel came into the game averaging just 7.2 points per game and 3.5 assists per game for the Atlanta Dream, but she was voted onto the All-Star team by virtue of the fan vote. Schimmel was boosted by Louisville's large 10,000-per night fan base as well as her strong support from the Native American community.
She didn't disappoint, hitting six three pointers while scoring 29 points. She was 10 of 23 from the floor and had eight assists.
"The hoop kept getting bigger and bigger," Schimmel said. "I wanted to lay it out on the line and that's what I did."
Schimmel's highlight of the night was a spinning over-the-head shot over 6-foot-8 center Brittney Griner, which was reminiscent of Schimmel's amazing layup over Griner during Louisville's upset of Griner's Baylor team in 2013.
She also hit a three with 41 seconds left in overtime with her East squad trailing 124-120. After a defensive stop, the East won the game on a layup by Tamika Catchings.
