Louisville Baseball scores a win for Gilda's Club

The No. 2 Louisville baseball team defeated the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers, 11-1 on Tuesday for Cancer Awareness Night at Jim Patterson Stadium. Coach Dan McDonnell was very pleased with the turnout from the fans for this game that is for a very special cause.

“Great crowd for a Tuesday night,” McDonnell said. “I just want people to know about Gilda’s Club. I’m sure that they raised money for Gilda’s Club, but it’s more than just money. It’s the awareness that there’s a great resource in the city of Louisville for not just somebody with cancer, but all the family members, all of the friends. So the more people that hear about Gilda’s Club, hopefully the more people take advantage of it.”

McDonnell is grateful for the game of baseball because it allows his team to promote different organizations and causes that help bring awareness to the community.

“Baseball is such a unique game because there are so many opportunities,” said McDonnell. “We can use this platform for the Patriotic Night and events like this. I remember when I was 18 to 22, I was in my own little bubble. I didn’t know much that was going on in the world. With technology, Twitter, and everything else, these kids know what’s going on. So for us to address cancer, recognize those that fight it, and continue to try to raise money and awareness, it’s a win-win tonight.”

The Cardinals head back on the road for a weekend series against the No. 16 Virginia Cavaliers. First game starts on Friday at 6 p.m.
