Beautiful day right now in Omaha, but could get rough later on. NCAA just sent a weather advisory that said Louisville's game may be delayed

UC Irvine with three runs in the eighth inning to take a 3-1 lead on Texas.

This would be big.

Hmmm ... more World Cup watching then ...

And given how many rain delays we endured in our regional, I know we can handle it ...

Go Cards.
Beat Kandy.

OMAHA, Neb. Vanderbilt coach Tim Corbin namedCarson Fulmer the starting pitcher for the Commodores' first game of the College World Series, saying the sophomore was the best option to face the Louisville offense today.

The decision to go with Fulmer over first-round pickTyler Beede, who received the ball first in each of the Commodores' 15 series this season, is a somewhat surprising choice.

First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. on ESPN2.

"It's just about matchups now," Corbin said. "It's matching up a pitcher's skill-set against a team's skill-set, and that's what we tried to do."

"I told the kids leading up to this well before the regional, I said, 'Listen, you might throw these rotations out the door now.' If it fits, it fits, but it doesn't mean that we're going to do the same thing because now you play different teams. It's not three-game sets anymore, with the exception of what happened last week. It's just a matter of matching up our talent against someone else's talent."

Fulmer (6-1, 1.78 ERA) said Corbin informed him of the decision Tuesday.

Fulmer has won six of his seven starts since moving into the starting rotation on April 19. He took a no-decision in a Super Regional game against Stanford, giving up a career-high four earned runs in 6 1/3 innings.

"The only thing that has changed is that I get the ball in the first game," Fulmer said. "Nothing has changed otherwise. We're all here together and we have a plan to win this thing, and that just happens to include me throwing the first game."

Beede (8-7, 3.58), was taken 14th overall by San Francisco last week, but he has struggled with consistency, including last week's Super Regional.

In spite of being handed a 10-0 lead through three innings against Stanford, Beede was unable to record the five innings necessary for a win. He was pulled after allowing six runs in 4 2/3 innings.

In last season's Super Regional loss to Louisville, Beede made the start in a 2-1 loss at Hawkins Field. Beede, who entered the game with a 14-0 record, lasted just 2 2/3 in<FZ,1,1,59>nings after allowing five hits and three walks.

Fulmer who relieved Beede on that day and threw 5 1/3 scoreless innings to close the game, but the Commodores were unable to provide the runs necessary to extend their season.

Go Cards!!!!!!!!!

Cards were fired up in pregame. Zach Lucas and Sutton Whiting did backflips near the team huddle in right field.

Not to be outdone by Louisville's double-flip, Vandy just had two players execute a perfect "Eagle" position a la Turk and JD from Scrubs

Groundout, groundout, K for Louisville in the first inning. Vandy's Carson Fulmer is statistically their best pitcher.
6/14 8:14 PM | IP: Logged
All four flags in right field are pointed right at home plate.

The wind is howling into the stadium.
6/14 8:15 PM | IP: Logged
First two outs were quick for Funkhouser. He walked Vince Conde and then a balk. Zander Wiel just took a foul ball for a ride.
6/14 8:25 PM | IP: Logged Thanks. Keep it coming Howie. On the road.

Huge hit by Grant Kay missed going out in left field by 2 feet. Any other day that would have been a two-run homer.

The wind coming in from center field had to have an effect.

Couldn't see it from the press box, did Funkhouser pick the guy off at first?Welp, now he's out. Nevermind.

Our photog on the first base line says he was out dead to rights.

So RHP Beede was in the DH spot so Vandy will apparently bring up whoever they'd like in his spot in the batting order. Now it is Ro Coleman

Vandy loads the bases in the bottom of the 2nd with two outs. Roger Williams comes out to speak with Funkhouser.
6/14 8:53 PM | IP: Logged
Wild pitch scores Norwood from third. Louisville down 1-0 in the 2nd inning with bases loaded and 2 outs.

Two run double to left-center for Vandy's Dansby Swanson. Commodores are up 3-0 now in the bottom of the 2nd.

Aaahhhh...I hate when mistakes lead to runs. Clean it up Cards!
6/14 9:01 PM | IP: Logged
Vandy's Carson Fulmer has only given up 3 or more runs twice this season. Not looking good for Louisville after that rough 2nd inning.

walks will kill you every time. Both scored. Ump didn't help on that 3-2 pitch.
6/14 9:07 PM | IP: Logged

Looks like Roger Williams just got the bull pen up and going.

Funk is in a funk ...

6/14 9:14 PM | IP: Logged
3 runs is a huge lead in this ballpark.
6/14 9:17 PM | IP: Logged
Another wild pitch puts a runner on second.

Vandy has 1 out in the bottom of the third, 3-0 lead.

I know CDM wants to stick it out with Funk but he's going to have to pull him while we're still within striking distance.
6/14 9:24 PM | IP: Logged
5 walks in first 3 innings. Ouch!
6/14 9:25 PM | IP: Logged
Funkhouser is in the mid-70s in pitches and its only the 3rd inning. Vandy has been working him. Kyle McGrath is warming up.
6/14 9:26 PM | IP: Logged
Funkhouser needs to be pulled.

Double steal puts runners on second and third, but Funkhouser strikes out Norwood looking to end the threat. Cards down 3-0 in 4th.
6/14 9:30 PM | IP: Logged

Good to get Funk though that inning. If we can milk one more inning out of him, without giving any runs up, that will help preserve some staff ...

We need some bats, boys!!  Let's get after it!!

6/14 9:31 PM | IP: Logged
Really need to plate a run or 2 this inning.
6/14 9:34 PM | IP: Logged
Chittenden base hit down the left field line. Solak on second and Chitty on first for Corey Ray with 1 out.
6/14 9:36 PM | IP: Logged
Ray checked his swing, struck out - the runners were going and Solak was tagged out at third. Ouch. Rough way to end an inning.

Well THAT hurt ...

6/14 9:40 PM | IP: Logged
Dansby Swanson steals second and an errant throw by Gibson sends him to third. He scored on a triple by Bryan Reynolds. Vandy up 4-0.

6/14 9:51 PM | IP: Logged

UGH ...

Had 2 outs, 0-2, just a man on first ...

Stolen base, with throw going into center, gets runner to third. Then a triple ....

6/14 9:51 PM | IP: Logged
All 4 Vandy runs have come with 2 outs. Can't get that damn 3rd out.
6/14 9:52 PM | IP: Logged

Zach Lucas saves a run there ... very nice grab to end the inning. He had to get on his ladder for that one.

We got to Fulmer last inning ... need to keep doing that. And push some across this inning.

And pull Funk for McGrath starting out next inning.

Still a lot of baseball to play.

Vandy pitcher Carson Fulmer has not given up more than 4 runs this season. Louisville currently trails 4-0 in the 5th.
6/14 9:53 PM | IP: Logged
Really hard for the team to stay sharp when the pitcher is constantly struggling.

6/14 9:54 PM | IP: Logged
Through four innings - Louisville's Funhouser: 97 pitches. Vandy's Fulmer: 62 pitches.
6/14 9:54 PM | IP: Logged
Looks like Omaha 2013 again.
6/14 9:54 PM | IP: Logged
RBI triple by Sutton Whiting. Louisville gets on the board in the 5th inning. Whiting scored Kay from first.

6/14 9:59 PM | IP: Logged

Sutton Whiting shoulda had an in the park home run there. But a nice triple to score one.

Now one out.

But we are at the top of the order now.

Let's go boys. We're getting to Fulmer.

6/14 10:01 PM | IP: Logged
Gibson knocks Whiting home. Cardinals cut Vandy's lead in half in the 5th inning so far. 4-2.
