A total of 262 student athletes were named to the University of Louisville Athletic Director's Honor Roll for the Fall of 2003. Athletes posting a grade point average (gpa) of 3.00 or higher for the semester will be honored during halftime of the men's basketball game versus the University of Houston on January 28 in Freedom Hall.
"This explodes the notion that you can't have excellence in the classroom and still succeed in the field of competition," said Tom Jurich, vice president for athletics, whose two sons are on the list. "I am very proud of the caliber of students we continue to recruit, who are successful competitors, strong students and conscientious community citizens."
It is the second highest total ever for the honor roll and it includes 25 athletes who posted a perfect 4.0 gpa for the semester. The number represents exactly 50 percent of the student athletes at the University of Louisville who have earned a 3.0 or better.
""We have set the standards for academic excellence very high," said Marvin Mitchell, associate athletic director for academics. "Our student-athletes are working hard to live up to these lofty standards. I am excited about the academic success they have achieved thus far, and I still expect them to improve each and every year."
