Acting Louisville coach David Padgett named Trent Johnson as an assistant coach Wednesday.

Johnson, who replaces Padgett as an assistant coach, is the first staff member named to Louisville coaching staff since the suspension of Rick Pitino and the placement of Kenny Johnson and Jordan Fair on administrative leave after the pay-for-play scandal revealed by an FBI investigation.

While Padgett still needs two more assistants, both Fair and Kenny Johnson will be on administrative leave until at least Monday when the University of Louisville Athletic Association meets to discuss their employment.

Trent Johnson's 36-years of coaching will come in handy for Padgett, a first-time head coach. Johnson has been coaching longer than Padgett has been alive.

"I wanted to make sure we targeted someone with head coaching experience," Padgett said. "I'd be crazy to think that I didn't need help because I don't have any head coaching experience."

Johnson has been the head coach at four different major programs, starting at Nevada from 1999-2004, then Stanford from 2004-08 before leading LSU from 2008-12 and then TCU from 2012-16.

"Coach Johnson is highly experienced," Padgett said. "I've personally known him for a long time. He was the head coach at Nevada when his son and I played high school together. He is going to bring a wealth of knowledge to our program. He's someone that I will be able to lean on and our players will be able to relate well to him. I think under the circumstances, I don't think we could find a better hire."

Trent Johnson was also an assistant coach at Utah, Washington, Rice and Stanford from 1986 through 1999.
