A safety with tremendous potential. Scouts in south Florida believe Michael Johnson was very underrated by rivals.com and others who deemed him a three-star recruit and just outside the Florida Top 100.
Johnson committed to Louisville in March of 2013 but still collected early offers from LSU, Nebraska, NC State, Pitt, USF, West Virginia and many others. He visited UCF and Nebraska before making his final pick.
Rivals.com's south Florida analyst raved about Johnson after a summer 7-on-7 tournament, writing: "Johnson continues to show tremendous cover ability from his safety spot. One thing we like is his versatility to play either free or strong with a chance to play corner in nickel situations at the next level. His team fell short in the quarterfinal round, but Johnson was a consistent force from his center field area. Another thing that won't show up in a box score is Johnson's leadership ability. He was a defensive captain and got his team in proper alignment on every snap."
Johnson on Coach Petrino: "I think he's a good guy and a good coach. He knows how to put up points, but he needs a good defense. I would love to come in and support the Cardinals because that's where I want to go."
