Louisville's women still stay perfect with a tough test upcoming. That's part of the Good in this week's column.
GOOD - Let's start there -the Louisville women are 12-0 and heading to Kentucky this weekend. Asia Durr is a genuine star., Myisha Hines-Allen is legitimately one of the best forwards in the nation and Jeff Walz is doing a masterful job getting his squad to focus on defense. The Cardinals are holding opponents to just 55 points per game this season and just 35.6 percent shooting overall. And it's not like Louisville has just racked up wins against Little Sisters of the Poor, the UofL women have three wins over teams which were ranked in the Top 25 at the time.
UGLY - It was UGLY Christmas sweater night at women's basketball the other night, and the staff and fans went all out. The winner of the night was assistant coach Sam Purcell, whose red and green plaid suit was a sight to behold. Here are my three favorites... (Purcell is on the far left)
GOOD - It's great to see Louisville Cardinal Donovan Mitchell leading the NBA in rookie scoring at 17.8 points per game. He's doing great things for the Utah Jazz and has already hit 66 threes this season. For more, click here.
GOOD - Speaking of Louisville basketball, this year's team picked up it's best win of the season last Saturday, and they'll have a chance at another decent win this weekend vs. Memphis in Madison Square Garden. The Cardinals are getting meaningful time (10 minutes or more per game) from 10 different players and have six different players averaging 7.3 or more points per game.
BAD - Louisville's RPI rating continues to lag well behind their actual strength as a team. As of Thursday morning, Louisville's RPI was 115th in the nation. Yep, 115th. Here's how we know it is early, though - others in Louisville's neighborhood are No. 135 Oregon (8-3), No. 133 Penn State (8-3) and Wisconsin (5-7). Of course, those who listen to my radio show - Monday-Friday, 7-10 am on 790 KRD radio, will know that my favorite ranking system is the KenPom. Louisville is 25th in the Ken Pomeroy ratings, Oregon is 52nd, Penn State is 40th and Wisconsin is 61st.
GOOD - Here is David Padgett previewing this weekend's game against Memphis...
GOOD - For those who love football recruiting and all the intrigue that comes with it, you should absolutely become a premium member at CardinalSports.com and start reading Chris Person's incredible work. His latest Football Recruiting Insider is a must read for the next level Louisville fan. Click here to read it.
UGLY - Speaking of football, a couple of schools are milking some UGLY bowl losing streaks. Did you know that Kentucky hasn't won a bowl since 2008? And even worse, Indiana hasn't won a bowl since 1991?
GOOD - Great to see some Louisville freshmen like offensive tackle Mekhi Becton and linebacker Dorian Etheridge make Freshman All-America lists after the strong seasons they had. I wish redshirt freshmen center Robbie Bell and wideout Dez Fitzpatrick were included as well as both were key for the Cardinals' high-powered offense this season.
UGLY - The Shelby Park neighborhood in Louisville could use your help this week as they dry out from a massive water main break that soaked blocks of our city. The flooding down the streets impacted cars, garages, houses... it was a ridiculous amount of water. Here's some on-site video...
GOOD - Congrats to Bilal Powell for earning his UofL degree. I'm impressed with his mindset to make sure he completes that degree even while he competes at the highest level. Bilal wasn't the only one who was able to work through the Cardinal Degree Completion program to come back and get his degree. Former student-athletes Adrian Cann, Pedro Coutinho, Joao De Lucca, Dominque Dishman and Kevin Mumphrey returned to UofL to finish their degrees.
Here is the full story.
GOOD - I like seeing Louisville football players taking their degree studies seriously. Five Louisville football players started this season with their degrees in hand and eight more earned their degrees during December graduation: Javonte Bagley, Reggie Bonnafon, Henry Famurewa, Lukayus McNeil, Traveon Samuel, Charles Standberry, Trumaine Washington, and Malik Williams.
UGLY - The legal battle between UofL and former coach Rick Pitino could get ugly. Pitino sued the University and Adidas. Now the University is suing Pitino. My hope is that all of this gets resolved outside the courts and that UofL doesn't have to pay millions to fight this issue in court.
