James Hearns, one of Louisville's most-effective defensive players this season, won't play in the Citrus Bowl. Coach Bobby Petrino says the Cardinals had to adjust.

"Yeah, that's a lot for us. There's no question," Petrino said. "James has been a great pass rusher for us. Henry (Famurewa) has been a guy that provides a lot of depth and can play multiple positions. So, we'll just have to make up for it with a couple of different guys."

Both Hearns and Famurewa were victims of gunshot wounds during an off-campus party the night Lamar Jackson won the Heisman Trophy. Louisville defensive coordinator Todd Grantham said when he heard the news his heart stopped. Thankfully, both are expected to make a full recovery.

"That was something that was a tragedy, something that we talked to our team about, that we're very fortunate that we're not at a funeral right now," Petrino said. "... that both of them are healthy and have an opportunity to continue their career and get their degrees and do everything that they came to the University of Louisville to do."

Petrino said the prognosis appears good.

"I think James will be back for spring for sure," Petrino said. "He has an elbow injury. Henry has an injury to his foot and his shoulder. But, we do think that they'll both be back. I'm not sure of the timetable on Henry just yet."

Petrino said other players must step up to fill the spots left by Hearns and Famurewa.

"Jonathan Greenard will be in there," Petrino said. "Jonathan's had a good year. He's played a lot of snaps. He's been productive and made plays for us. Stacy Thomas is another guy that can play multiple positions. He actually started his career at the position that James plays. So we'll be able to mix him in there and get production. And we all know Stacy has been a really good football player for us."
